A free and independent directory for students seeking support for accessibility needs on campus.

Our Story Examples Development

Facts:

• Less than a third of buildings at the main campus of Kalamazoo College have elevators.

• There are only 24 disability accessible parking spots on the Kalamazoo College main campus.

• Out of the six residential halls at Kalamazoo College, only two of them are wheelchair accessible.

Our Story

Why we believe Kalamazoo College needs more disability support:

Accessibility at Kalamazoo College originated because of our examination of the structure of Kalamazoo College and the inclusion of students on campus through accessibility. We discovered that much of the campus is not accessible because there are no ramps, automatic doors, and elevators. Therefore, we created a detailed project about the accessibility of the campus: how it works, the limitations, and additional resources because we want our community to be informed and that people with disabilities are not forgotten or ignored en our community. We want to make changes in the Kalamazoo College campus, we hope this project influences the K community and faculty to make the campus more accessible for everyone.

Examples

Images illustrating examples of how accessibility infastructure at Kalamazoo College can be improved:

If you believe there are other examples that should be addressed here, please email john.oneill23@kzoo.edu. Please provide images and a description of how said infastructure can be improved.

Fine Arts Building lobby doors with stairs

Fine Arts Building

This photo shows the automatic doors of the Fine Arts Building (FAB). The automatic doors are on the first level in the back of the building leading to the parking lot shared with Dow. On the right, the photo is of the main doors connecting to the lobby and staircases inside the building of the FAB. These doors are accessed with stairs. Even though this building is accessible, it is not inclusive in having ramps and automatic doors as part of the main entrance.

Hoben ramp and automatic door DeWaters dorm sidewalk access

Residential Halls

These photos show the two dorm halls available for students with disabilities. Hobin, pictured on the left, has a ramp leading to an automatic door with first-floor access to accessible dorm rooms for first years only. DeWaters, pictured on the right, has sidewalks from the Throwbridge/Dewaters parking lot to the DeWaters dorm, which has automatic doors on the second floor and the dorm rooms available for disabled students. Neither of these dorm halls has elevators. However, there is still access to a kitchen area.

Stetson Chapel Cavern stairs Stetson Chapel seating interior

Stetson Chapel

Both photos on the left show the same entrance, as to indicate the ramp that is available for the accessible entrance to the Chapel. This is on the left side of the main entrance. The Chapel, unfortunately, does not have an elevator to be able to access the Cavern in the basement. The Cavern is pictured on the right, and has stairs immediately when you enter.

Festival Playhouse entrance

The Playhouse

This photo shows the entrance to the Festival Playhouse, which can be accessed with a ramp and stairs. However, there are no automatic doors, which would not only help disabled people but also anyone who is in need of that assistance.

Dow Science Center doors

Dow Science Center

Here this image displays the doors leading to Dow Science Center (the most commonly used doors to enter the building), which are also the closest to the parking lot in between Dow and the Fine Arts Building. These doors also lead to the elevator used in the building and staircases to two levels. There are ramps located in front of Dow from the parking lot onto the sidewalk. However, the building does not have automatic doors to enter.

Accessible parking on Academy Street near Dewing

Academy Street – Dewing

This photo shows two of the accessible parking spots that are available on Academy Street. The snow that has fallen has created a mound on the grass area next to the sidewalk. The only way for a person to get out of their car and to a building would be onto the road. This can put people with disabilities at risk of being hit without proper pavement.

Development

Message from John O'Neill, website developer:

When I began this site, I knew little to nothing about developing websites. This website was initially created for a class in which Rylee, Kinga, and I were group members SPAN 455, and was programmed through HTML and CSS using what I knew and had learned using w3 schools and google, but has changed drastically since my programming skills have improved. Below I have included the changes made throughout this site's history.
